Serangan Island, Bali, 27 July 2006—premierre documentary film created by locals and film makers specialty in community was held in Serangan Village. These films were the result of the friendship and understanding on people’s struggle to face the ecological challenges and poverty aftermath the Serangan Island’reclaimed. The short documentary films is made to promote the make use of audio visual media as the device to show the changes inside the society. The premierre documentary film is the result of the workshop “self-documented the experience to face the environment challenges through a film†in Sanur 17 til 27 July 2006. The event organised by PPLH-Bali supported by Ragam and UNDP-GEF Small Grants Programme Indonesia. The workshop ended with exchanging pictures and footages among the sixteen tribe society participants and social changing worker of the 6 islands. “Watching picture in the form of photographic and motion picture is a freeing experience, because the audiences were free to have imagination with their own perspectives and take their own decision. In the practice of people organization, documentary film can be a powerful device to affect for people to watch and valueing their environment and themselves,†said Roem Topatimasang of INSIST, whom started using community video since 1988 with basic technology. Roem used beta camera to voice Yamdena Island people who suffering coercion from the authority because they tried to fend off the logging in the small island. “Now, after we were able to demonstrate that we, just another village people able to make our own film, we’re more confident. We use the film not only to have documented traditional ceremonies, but also to record negotiation process in order to expand the territory to involve people’s opinion, neighboring people’s opinion that should be heard,†said Rizal Mahfud, the chair of youth organization Ngata Toro FOHTKA, Lore Lindu, Kulawi, Central Sulawesi. The twelve days workshop had formulated an agreement to start cataloguing crude pictures and supporting resources film that had been made by community film makers in the virtual library that manage involuntary together, www.videokomunitas.com. “Voluntary video community will be useful to voice the weaken society in the decision making process in the various level that affected to their whole life and environment. The Permanent Forum for Tribe Society Issue had used the film in New York, on May 2006. It will be helpful all parties if a place to store the material that can be accessed by anyone, whenever and everywhere and keep storing, managing and learning from the record on the changed lifestyle that documented in their own perspectivesâ€, explained Avi Mahaningtyas, National Coordinator of UNDP GEF SGP Indonesia-a multilateral program that support the society learning management in order to face the environmental challenges and poverty.
