“Next, we present three short plays from primary schools which are joined the Urban Green School Program. Please welcome the children from SDN 3 Serangan to perform the first play ‘Rubbish is treasure’….†(quoted from the MC on Art Performances in Children Day celebrated by PPLH Bali) On 12 – 13 August 2006, PPLH Bali held an event to celebrate National Children Day which was actually occurred every 23 July. Lots of children from all over Denpasar came to enjoy the celebration. The hall of Education Agency/Department of Bali became the perfect location for the event as it was easy to access from anywhere in Denpasar. On day 1, there was a seminar themed ‘The Healthy Environment Will Create A Smart Generation’. This seminar was attended by more than 200 people, mostly were the students from primary to secondary schools, and also their teachers. The head of Environmental Control Centre (Pusat Pengendalian Lingkungan Hidup) Bali-Nusra, R.Sudirman, opened the seminar by hitting the gong (traditional music instrument). Two keyspeakers were invited, I Gede Suarjana from Environmental Effect Control Body (Badan Pengendalian Dampak Lingkungan) of Bali, and Retno IG Kusuma, a psycholog. Cok Sawitri, a famous artist woman in Bali, led the seminar attractively. She gave time to the participants, esp. the children questioning the subject which have delivered by the keyspeakers. I Gede Suarjana revealed the fact about environmental damage in Bali, while Retno IG Kusuma talking in perspective of child psychology to raise environmental awareness. There were two adult and five children who used their chance to ask to keyspeakers. Cok Sawitri gave them souvenirs for raising questions. The activity was ended by a conclusion concerning the children right in order to raise environmental awareness and conserving the environment. Day 2 was started by three activities went together, the Competition of Information Board for Environmental News, target participants are primary school’s students. Then Presentation of Clean and Healthy School Competition by five contestants, and some booths of free and simple health check up was opened for the kids who were coming on that day. Those three went about two hours before the MC took all attention from the participants and visitor to follow some performances on the stage. The first show was Joged dance performed by students of SDN 4 Panjer, then followed by a wonderful song sang by children from Jodie O’Shea Orphanage. Last but not least were three short play, performed by students from SDN 3 Serangan, SDN 2 Tonja and SDN 12 Sanur. The plays were directed by team from PPLH Bali, presenting ideas to save the nature in simple ways. The audiences appreciated the performances by giving the long handclaps to the children who performed.. After that, PPLH Bali announcing the winner of the competitions held on this event. Students’ team from SDN no. 8 Sanur became the winner of Information Board for Environmental News Competition. They made a pretty information board with most environmental friendly material like reusing paper board. Then the Clean and Healthy School Competition was won by SDN no. 4 Panjer. They looked so happy and proud to get the big prize. At the end, we invited all the children to join some usual competition for celebrating Independence day, like gunny sacks race, bring-small-marble-ball-on the spoon race, etc. They enjoyed the day very much and looked forward to have PPLH Bali come to their schools, sharing environmental education. Big curiousity in their eyes brought the hope of tomorrow for us to have a better environment.
