The clock showed time about 2.15 p.m, fifteen kids from Sekolah Alam, an alternative environmental school in Jakarta, arrived at Ngurah Rai airport. They who escorted by 5 teachers, had field trip to Bali on 28th February – 3rd March 2006. They trusted PPLH Bali to organize the four-day trip. The topic of their trip was “Learning the Surface of the Earthâ€. Right after they arrived, we picked them up and brought them to the homestay by a mini bus. On that day, they had own plan to see the traditional dance and ancient relief on temple walls in Ubud, Gianyar. After had lunch and prayed, they went there without us. On the next day, we took them at 7.30 to go hiking on a hill near Buyan Lake, Bedugul, central part of Bali. We were a little bit worried because the rain was running down in Denpasar. The location was about 1.5 hours from Denpasar. When we got there, we were welcomed by a wide smile from Mario, a man who guided us on hiking. Not like in Denpasar, the weather there was clear and sunny, it was perfect to do such activity. We were amazed by the scene of the hill while we trekked, there were blue lake down there, the trees like a green carpet, and the misty air like the curtain from heaven. We successfully reached the top of the hill after two hours trekking. Wow, it felt like we just went back from a fairyland! After the hiking, we still had time to visit the Ulun Danu temple near Bratan lake, about twenty minutes from the Buyan lake. Then, we went south to visit Tanah Lot. Unfortunately, we could not see the sunset because we had to go back to Denpasar before dark. But the students and their teachers were pretty glad to see the beautiful scene and took pictures. The third day, the kids were ready to go at 7 pm. We had to get ready early because we were going to do snorkeling and canoeing. It was good to do those activity before the sun rose high. We chose Serangan island for the location, at the site of coral transplantation on the eastern of the island. Wayan Patut, the pioneer of the environmental conservation and the public figure at Serangan, helped us to do the activities. The three-year age coral under the water was wonderful, it was surrounded by many colourful fishes! They also had a good time to learn and struggle controlling the canoe. Most of the kids did not want to stop snorkeling and canoeing. But they had to if they wanted to see the turtle conservation like included on the schedule. On the turtle conservation site, at the same island, we met Wayan Geria, the manager of the project. The site was placed on a building which contained hall and ten ponds to put the baby turtles and the injured turtles that they found from illegal market. The students got a booklet about turtle and many information from there. Two hours later, we went to Sanur beach, fill up the time before going to airport. They enjoyed playing the water at the beach until their teachers had to push them out from the water. We arrived at airport an hour before the schedule of the plane to take off. It was hard to say good bye after four days together, but we promised to keep in contact each other. After taking picture with them, we saw them walked into the check-in room and waved until they out of our sight. We are glad to share information with them and look forward to do another trip with other students. (jen)
