Place of waste management of village Sanur Kauh (West Sanur) has been built and opened by I.B. Rai Mantra, the Vice of Major of Denpasar, on February 6th, 2006. There are many VIP guest, Mrs Bintang Puspayoga, first lady of Denpasar, Heads of sub district in Denpasar, Heads of village in Denpasar, Board of traditional village of Sanur, Board of traditional village of Intaran (other area nearby Sanur), and many other guests.

From the survey done by PPLH Bali on September 2005, there were only waste from 862 households, from 2,654 households, which were picked by city cleaning service every day. There were four containers which brought to the final dump location at Suwung every day. The board of the village decided to manage waste problem seriously. They were hoping all inhabitants will get the advantage and make an effort to manage their own waste.
Depot “Palasari”, built on a location size six acres, was borrowed from Made Dana- the village secretary at village Sanur Kauh. It took about Rp 128.7 million to build the depot. The city government gave financial support about Rp 60 million, the rest were from the community.

The Depot has employed ten persons- seven men, three women, they are the local people. Their work included picking the waste, separating and composting. The workers got monthly salary from the contribution paid by the community. But they needed to get used with rubbish because they never work as waste picker or work with rubbish before.

Until now, the Depot only able to manage a container of rubbish every day or four m3. The separating process that still done at Depot, not on each household, made the workers could not work any faster. Most of rubbish that taken from the houses were organic waste. The inorganic waste which has economic value, had been taken by city cleaning service and waste picker. So, the manager of Depot decided to concern on composting.
Depot “Palasari” had two machines to chop the organic waste. These machines were hoped to fasten the process of decomposition. Beside the machines, decomposition process were also helped by microorganism, added EM4 and bioextract of fruits. PPLH Bali still assists the activities at Depot until now.

We need to wait and be patient if we wish for a best result. The important is the process of working together amongst the people to deal with waste problem. If we get through it well, the Depot will has benefit and create a healthy and clean environment. (ctr)
